Appeals

An appeal is a different proceeding from a trial. The appellate court reviews the record and the law, and the outcome turns on the written briefs and the issues preserved below. We handle civil appeals for clients we represented at trial and for clients who come to us after a judgment.

What We Handle

  • Appeals to the Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court

  • Appeals from general sessions court to circuit court

In most Tennessee civil cases, the notice of appeal is due within 30 days after the final judgment is entered. Appeals from general sessions court have a much shorter deadline. Federal civil appeals generally also require notice within 30 days. Call immediately after an adverse judgment.

Can I bring new evidence on appeal?

Generally no. The appellate court decides the case on the record made in the trial court.
